Big Data is concerned with size, type, and speed, characterized as Volume, Variety, and Velocity (3V). The key is the effective processing of large-scale data to obtain correlation and insights in a context-aware manner. On the other hand, Cloud Computing is literally about everything in the format of a service, such as Software-, Infrastructure-, and Platform-as-Service (SIP). It is intriguing to explore the synergy between Big Data and Cloud to see how SIP meets 3V.


Interestingly, senior analyst Daniel Ives shares the similar thoughts in a recent Business and Application

Software Report. He thinks that two real big growth areas now are Big Data and Cloud.

The table on the lower part of the enclosed diagram illustrates the interplay of individual elements in Cloud and Big Data. 

  • From an application perspective, Cloud is a crucial enabler to make Big-Data-as-a-Service happen. 
  • From an implementation perspective, Cloud provides ingredients to abstract the complexity in the design time and simplify the provisioning in the deployment time. 
  • From an operation perspective, Cloud offers building blocks to run Big Data systems elastically on-premise or off-premise.

The converged Big Data cloudification is becoming the key driving force for technology innovations in the next few quarters.
